Hebrew Learning
3rd - 6th Grade
Our School’s Mission
To instill within our learners a love of Judaism through the study of Jewish history, liturgy, Torah, holidays, ethics, customs, and values, and to inspire them to embrace their heritage and lead Jewish lives both inside and outside our Jewish community.
Hebrew Learning Goals
- Participate meaningfully in worship services in any synagogue with a firm foundation in prayer. Learning basic vocabulary and grammar as an introduction to modern Hebrew.
- Demonstrate a grounding in the basic building blocks of Hebrew to develop an understanding of prayers, Torah, and modern language.
- Achieve a level of confidence that leads to a meaningful Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
- Recognize values, concepts, and Jewish holiday observance through the use of Hebrew language and song.
- Develop an appreciation for the importance of the place of Hebrew in Jewish life.
Hebrew Learning Structure
Formal Hebrew instruction begins in 3rd grade in addition to prayer study during Sunday Religious School.
In preparation for B’nai Mitzvah training, all students are required to complete four years of Hebrew studies.
We use textbooks, experiential game-based learning, and apps in our Hebrew learning program at Beth Tikvah.
Small Group Hebrew:
Students meet in small groups of 4-6 students in the same age group with an instructor for one hour per week.
Small group Hebrew takes place on weekday afternoons and Sundays with times chosen by families after registration and membership commitments are made.
Hebrew:
Students meet one-on-one with an instructor for 45 minutes (day/time are determined by the family and instructor).
Through private instruction, accommodations for specific learning needs can be made. Families who live a far distance or have unpredictable weekday schedules usually choose this option. Students who want to go further in their Hebrew studies are encouraged to select this option as well.
